U.S. Announces Higher Tariffs, Including 35% on Canada

President Donald Trump’s tariff rates were supposed to kick in Friday, but have now been delayed a week.

Trump signed a pair of executive orders this week that increase tariffs on merchandise from some 70 countries. The orders also increased tariffs on products made in Canada, one of the country’s largest trading partners, to 35 percent.

Higher tariff rates were scheduled to begin Friday, but now won’t take effect for another week in order to give Customs and Border Protection officials time to prepare, the White House said in a statement.

The Washington Post reported that U.S. diplomats, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, have recently reached trade deal frameworks with several countries, including the European Union, Vietnam, Japan and the United Kingdom, sparing them from the high tariff levies Trump announced in April.

Those countries that have not agreed to new trade terms are being divided into three brackets: countries where the U.S. enjoys a trade surplus will see their goods taxed at a 10% rate when landing on U.S. shores; merchandise from countries where the U.S. incurs a small trade deficit will be hit with a 15% tax; and products from all other countries will face extra customs fees running as high as 41%, the Post reported.

The U.S. average tariff rate, which began the year around 2.5%, will sit at 18.4% once the new levies take effect, according to the Yale Budget Lab.

Trump said earlier Thursday, after speaking with Mexican President Claudia Schienbaum, that he would extend the deadline for Mexico to make a deal for another 90 days. China’s deadline had earlier been pushed to Aug. 12 as the countries hold talks. Separately Thursday, Trump cast doubt on a trade deal with Canada after that country prepared to recognize a Palestinian state, according to the Post.
