Nature of Work
This is manual work in the care and maintenance of city facilities, streets and grounds. Work is performed under the continuing supervision of a designated supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.- Removes trash, debris, shrubs, grass clippings and the like from city-owned grounds and streets and disposes of them properly
- Maintains grounds by cutting grass, trimming shrubs, and providing other grounds maintenance assistance; shovels snow; assists in setting up burial equipment and pouring concrete foundations
- Fills in potholes; shovels asphalt; sets concrete; installs street signs
- Cleans walls, windows, doors, floors; straightens up work areas; moves furniture, materials and supplies; picks up and delivers supplies, parts and materials
- Operates hand and power mowers and related equipment; uses hand and standard power tools; assists in snow and ice removal.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Education and Experience- Completion of tenth grade
- Some experience in general laboring work
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience
- Possession of a valid Michigan commercial driver's license or ability to obtain within six months.
Work Hours: 7 AM to 3:30 PM with overtime hours as needed. From the end of November until April hours may be on 3rd shift.THIS IS A SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION SUBJECT TO THE DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION (DOT) RANDOM DRUG & ALCOHOL TESTING PROGRAM. A DOT WAIVER FORM MUST BE COMPLETED WHEN AN APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED.Other Necessary Qualifications
Knowledge of:- Some knowledge of standard hand and power tools and equipment used in facilities and grounds maintenance activities
- Some knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and heavy physical labor
- Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
- Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
- Assigning, prioritizing, monitoring, and reviewing work assignments
- Read and follow written and oral instructions
- Operate such equipment as hand and power mowers, weed eater, or hand and power tools
- Perform heavy manual labor, including bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting heavy objects
