    Nature of Work

    This is a responsible technical support work performing a variety of engineering support tasks. Work is performed under the continuing supervision of an engineer, surveyor or other supervisor. The employee may serve as a lead worker over a crew and may be expected to give guidance and assistance to less experienced employees.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO ENGINEERING SERVICES:
    The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

    • Inspects construction sites for soil erosion and sedimentation control compliance; ensures all external elements are in place in accordance with the approved plans.
    • Drafts plans for various engineering improvements and installations; prepares construction drawings based on engineer's notes, survey notes, field and records research and engineering calculations; updates utility maps, street number systems maps, plats, subdivision, and other engineering records based on "as built", survey notes and other information.
    • Inspects methods and materials used by contractors to construct public improvements; ensures conformity with plans and specifications and intended results for construction a variety of public works improvement projects.
    • Maintains a variety of records pertaining to utility and other public facilities and projects.
    • Provides maps, plans, drawings and sketches to contractors, engineers, consultants and co-workers.
    • Utilizes computers and computer programs to maintain project documents and records.
    • Researches records to determine property ownership and obtain other relevant information; conducts research of engineering plans showing underground utilities and other city facilities and provides information to contractors, consultants, property owners and other
    • Review and approves applications for utility, TOP, sidewalk and encroachment permits.
    • Meets with contractors, property owners, and others to resolve complaints and problems.
    • Works with contractors to help manage assigned contracts.  Monitors work orders to verity and document completion.
    • Enforce City ordinances as it pertains to sidewalk snow enforcement.  
    Additional Duties and Responsibilities specific to the Engineering Department:
    • Inspect portions of the sidewalk network for non-complaint sidewalk
    • Mark and create work orders for repair
    • Follow up with citizen complaints for damaged sidewalk - and create sidewalk repair work orders
    • Work with contractors and repair contracts, inspect contractor work for compliance with city specs and contract documents
    • Approve work orders, quantities and restoration.
    • Completed work orders (Cityworks) and close out work orders
    • Perform Sidewalk Permit inspections for repairs made by private firms who are working within the ROW
    • ( Winter Months) – Perform sidewalk inspections for snow complaints
    • Work in inclement weather
    • Work on un-even surfaces

    Minimum Training and Experience
    Required Education and Experience
    • High School diploma.
    --AND--
    • At least two (2) years of experience in surveying, drafting, construction inspection or related work
    --OR--
    • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
    Required Qualifications:
    • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license or possession of a current valid license from another state and the ability to obtain a Michigan driver's license within 90 days of employment.
