• Meet Tina Wei Smith, WHIAAPI Executive Director

We are excited to announce that in December of 2019, Tina Wei Smith joined the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) as Executive Director. In this capacity, she is responsible for directing the efforts of the White House Initiative and the President’s Advisory Commission on AAPIs to advise federal agency leadership on the implementation and coordination of federal programs as they relate to AAPIs across executive departments and agencies. The Initiative and the Commission work to broaden access by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) employers and communities to economic resources and opportunities, thus empowering AAPIs to improve the quality of their lives, raise the standard of living for their families and communities, and more fully participate in our economy.

“It is an honor to serve the 22 million people who make up this important group of Americans. Our work has never been more critical as our nation and the AAPI community combat the challenges of COVID-19 and the pandemic’s associated economic impact,” says Smith. “WHIAAPI Co-Chairs, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao could not be more committed to this effort as they advise President Trump on how our government can best serve these vibrant and growing American communities."

Smith previously served at the U.S. Department of Labor in the Office of the Secretary and the Office of Public Liaison during the Bush Administration. There she supported the outreach to the minority communities, including outreach to the Asian Pacific Americans. She has also worked in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Heritage Foundation. Prior to joining the Department of Commerce, Smith spent the last 5 years in higher education and global engagement.
