Job Summary

The Oakland County Health Division will work collaboratively with Oakland Schools ISD to implement an initiative to assist with school start-up through public health prevention strategies to prevent COVID-19 transmission in Oakland County Schools.  CDC has issued guidance indicating the importance of "schools, working together with local health departments, have an important role in slowing the spread of diseases and protecting vulnerable students and staff, to help ensure students have safe and healthy learning environments". Under general supervision school nurses will provide communication, training, consultation and recommendations to the school districts as guided and directed by the Oakland County Health Division. 
 
School nurses in this program will provide COVID prevention activities that include but will not be limited to the following:   Providing consultation, leadership, professional development opportunities for quality school nursing and public health services to Oakland County school districts for prevention of COVID-19.  Serves as a team member of the individual district providing preventive services, early identification of problems, interventions, and referrals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Works within the context (characteristics, needs, and circumstances) within the individual district assigned to determine a set of health strategies appropriate for that district.  Monitors, interprets, synthesizes, and disseminates relevant research findings and other information related to COVID-19 public health, school nursing practice, current legal issues, and new legislation that impacts school health programs and services.  Interprets, reviews and disseminates model policies, standards, and best practices to promote safe, legal, and effective COVID-19 prevention strategies.  Plans and uses professional judgment and acts effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by Oakland County Health Division. 

Serves as the health care representative providing guidance and training to the school district on appropriate COVID-19 prevention strategies including COVID-19  health screening programs, infectious disease reporting, and contact tracing; and identification of students' chronic health care needs and how they may be impacted by COVID-19.  Reviews policies developed for school start-up to address COVID prevention including classroom set up plans, class staggering schedules, other social distancing activities.  Communicates with parents regarding the back to school public health nurse program to support COVID prevention strategies and their high-risk children with strategies to ensure their protection.  Trains students about COVID-19 and best practices for prevention and conduct handwashing classes.

1.  Be licensed by the Michigan Board of Nursing to practice as a registered professional nurse in the State of Michigan.

2.  Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license. Out of Country driver's license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver's license before the hire date.

3.  Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for the classification.

NOTE: Applicants who are not licensed by the State of Michigan and who meet the other requirements listed above may take this examination but will not be eligible for appointment until they have been licensed by or possess a valid permit from the Michigan Board of Nursing.
