Job SummaryUnder limited supervision, maintain and ensure a safe swimming environment at Oakland County water parks and/or park beaches using established techniques. (Techniques to be taught and practiced at initial and weekly in-service trainings). Supervises swimming and water activities and enforces safety rules. Responds to emergency situations. Assist with the general maintenance and cleaning of water parks and/or beaches.
Minimum Qualifications1. Must be at least 16 years old for waterparks and 18 years old for beaches and pass the four-day mandatory unpaid International Lifeguard Training Program that includes passing a three-part exam: physical condition, written and a hands-on practical.
NOTE: The parks' pre-employment swim test and the International Lifeguard Training Program are provided free by the Oakland County Parks. Training consists of two weekends, generally in April or May. Applicants must attend all four days and pass a written and practical test to complete training. Successful completion of training does not guarantee employment with Oakland County Parks and Recreation.
2. Must be proficient in and able to communicate effectively and verbally in the English language.
3. Pass the employment physical established for this classification.
Testing Requirements:
• To test-out at the end of class a candidate must:
o Meet the prerequisite and physical requirements outlined aboveo Attend all classes for session signed up for
o Complete a workbook that is provided on the first day of class. Candidates have one week to complete the basic workbook that follows along with the book. A copy of the book is provided to the candidates to use during their training. Only candidates that pass the class and are hired by OCPR or pay for their certification are issued a textbook to keep.
• Practical test-out: Must complete practical tests on CPR, First Aid, Spinals, Rapids and Saves.
• Written test-out: Pass ILTP written examination with 80% or better
Special Requirements1. If assigned to a youth recreational program, prior to employment, candidates will be required to provide Parks & Recreation with documentation from the Michigan Department of Human Services (previously called Family Independence Agency) that they have not been named in a central registry case as the perpetrator of child abuse or child neglect. In addition, applicants being considered for hire will be asked to sign a form authorizing Parks & Recreation to request and receive a criminal history check in accordance with the privacy act of 1974.
Applicants for positions at Parks & Recreation will not be considered if they have been convicted of either of the following:
(a) Child Abuse or Neglect.
(b) A felony involving harm or threatened harm to an individual within the 10 years immediately preceding the date of hire.
