General Helper (Part-Time)
Part-time Non-Eligible employees are not part of the Oakland County Merit System. These positions are limited to 1,000 hours per calendar year and are not eligible for benefits. A closing notice may be posted when a sufficient number of applications have been received to meet current needs.
Under close supervision, performs entry-level unskilled manual work. May perform the following tasks depending upon the assigned division:
WITHIN THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIVISION
Performs the following tasks under the supervision of the Warehouse Manager. Sorts boxes, lifts up to 50 lbs from floor to table height, utilizes a Pallet Jack, picks orders, fills orders, possibly drives a fork lift and / or a panel van or box truck to make deliveries. Sweeps and cleans in a general warehouse area. Other duties as assigned. Is alert to hazards and follows department safety and emergency procedures.
WITHIN THE GROUNDS MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT
May perform the following tasks depending upon the assigned division: digs, shovels and rakes grounds; cleans work sites, sewers, drains and catch basins or performs other routine unskilled work as assigned. Is alert to hazards and follows department safety and emergency procedures. May be scheduled for a day, afternoon or midnight shift, including weekends and holidays.
WITHIN THE CUSTODIAL DEPARTMENT
Duties include, but are not limited to sweeping, mopping, vacuuming carpeting, dusting, cleaning, polishing furniture and fixtures, emptying wastebaskets, cleaning and stocking lavatories with supplies; moving furniture, supplies and equipment and may unload and store freight delivered to buildings. Is alert to hazards and follows department safety and emergency procedures.
Note: This position works second shift, 4:00 pm to 1:30 am.
WITHIN THE BUILDING SAFETY DEPARTMENT
Under direct supervision, maintains a watch on County owned buildings. Periodically patrols assigned buildings. Checks for any signs of unauthorized entry, or immediate hazards such as fires or other dangers to the building security. Reports any problems to the appropriate authorities. May be assigned to perform radio communication duties. Shift assignments include nights, weekends, holidays and may require relief work on another shift. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. May be scheduled for a day, afternoon or midnight shift, including weekends and holidays.
WITHIN THE SUPPORT SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Works within the central Garage, performs entry-level routine manual tasks involved in servicing County owned vehicles in a central service garage. Assists in lubricating, changing oil, refueling, repairing and replacing tires, and cleaning of County vehicles. Maintains records of services performed, reports vehicle defects to higher level garage personnel, and may make emergency road service calls.
1. Have passed their 18th birthday; OR be at least 16 years old and a high school graduate; OR have completed the state requirements for the General Educational Development Test (GED); OR be an emancipated minor.
2. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this classification.
NOTE: A valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license will be required for certain positions. Out of Country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date.
3. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.
