    Asian Targeted Hate Crimes

Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) across the United States are reporting a significant increase in hate crimes, inflammatory and xenophobic rhetoric, harassment, and discrimination tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. These acts damage our society and counter the values of the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce (APACC). APACC is made up of both Asian and U.S.-based members who are aligned around a foundation of diversity, inclusivity, and support. We believe it is important for everyone to consider the impact of their words and actions on the country’s estimated 21 million Asian American Pacific Islanders, and to not tolerate aggression in the workplace, or the public arena. Hate against some of us, harms all of us. We encourage our members, partners, sponsors, and community to acknowledge, amplify, and denounce racism and the ongoing hate crimes targeting the Asian community.

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission (MCRC) and the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission (MAPAAC) have issued statements in response to a rise of violence and hate crimes targeting Asian Americans and individuals of Asian descent in Michigan and around the country. We urge individuals to contact the Department of the Attorney General Hate Crimes Unit if they have knowledge of, or are a victim of, a crime motivated by hate by phone at 313-456-0200 or by email at HateCrimes@michigan.gov.

National ACE and APIA Scholars jointly condemn the rise of anti-AAPI bias, violence and hatred, their press release here.
